The Research group on Personal Rights and Property Rights in the Faculty of Law is looking for a full-time (100%) doctoral scholarship holder in the field of private law.
Position
* You will work actively on the preparation and defence of a PhD thesis, in which you critically compare the legal framework of family and economic relationships regarding the protection against power imbalances between the parties. You conduct research in family law, family property law, contract law and economic law, under the supervision of supervisors Prof. Dr. Elise Goossens and Prof. Dr. Britt Weyts. You combine a deep knowledge of the law with a research interest in the broader social context. For more information on the project, please contact elise.goossens@uantwerpen.be.
* You will publish scientific articles related to the research project.
* You will carry out a limited number of teaching and research support tasks and service duties (e.g., examination supervision, sitting on committees or councils) within the Faculty of Law, and in particular within the research group on Personal Rights and Property Rights.
Profile
* You hold a Master degree in law or you will have obtained it by the time you start work.
* You can demonstrate excellent study results, or otherwise demonstrate your research competence.
* Your teaching competences are in line with the University of Antwerp’s educational vision.
* You act with attention to quality, integrity, creativity and cooperation.
What we offer
* We offer a full-time PhD scholarship for a period of 1 year. After a positive evaluation, the scholarship can be extended for additional periods of 1 year, up to a maximum of 4 years in total.
* The planned start date is September 1st, 2025 (earlier or later appointment is possible by mutual agreement).
* Your monthly scholarship amount is calculated according to the scholarship amounts for doctoral scholarship holders.
* You will receive ecocheques, Internet-connectivity allowance, and a bicycle allowance or a full reimbursement of public transport costs for commuting.
* You will do most of your work at the Stadscampus (city campus) in a dynamic and stimulating working environment.
Want to apply?
* You can apply for this vacancy through the University of Antwerp’s online job application platform up to and including April 23rd, 2025 (by midnight Brussels time). Click on the 'Apply' button and complete the online application form. Be sure to include the following attachments:
* a detailed account of your study results;
* your academic CV;
* a short memo (2-3 pages) on this article: GOOSSENS, E., 'Navigating legal protections for cohabiting and economic relationships: can the market/home dichotomy guide us?', Journal of Social Welfare and Family Law 2024 (available here). This article is related to the topic of the doctoral project (in particular from p. 10 onwards). The purpose of the memo is to gauge your research skills and own input/voice as a researcher. In the memo, you answer the following questions:
o Content analysis: Which core concepts are introduced in the article, and how do they relate to each other? Are there any other concepts or legal rules that could be involved in the research?
o Methodological analysis: What research methodology is used in the article? Are there alternative methodologies that you think could add value to the research?
o Theoretical positioning: How does the article position itself within the broader legal academic debate on power dynamics in family and economic relationships?
o Practical application: How relevant are the article's findings to practice (e.g., policy-making or legal practice)? Can you give examples of how these insights could be applied?
o Plan of action: How would you go about developing this research further? What sources would you consult first?
* The selection committee reviews all applications as soon as possible after the application deadline. As soon as a decision is made, we will notify you. If you are still eligible after the pre-selection, you will be informed about the possible next step(s) in the selection procedure. Please note the following dates in your calendar: May 7th and 9th, 2025 (selection interviews).
