Doctoral Scholarship in Digital Archaeology: The University of Antwerp, a dynamic and forward-thinking European university, invites applications for a full-time (100%) Doctoral Scholarship in the field of digital archaeology. The position is within the Department of Heritage and the Antwerp Cultural Heritage Sciences (ARCHES) research group in the Faculty of Design Sciences.
Research Area: Digital Archaeology – Modelling Space-Time Uncertainty in Archaeological Excavation Information
Location: University of Antwerp, City Campus, Antwerp, Belgium
* Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, or Physics, and a Master’s degree in Archaeology, OR
* Bachelor’s degree in Archaeology, and a Master’s degree in Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, or Physics (Master’s degree should be obtained before the start date).
* If holding a master’s degree from a Belgian university, graduated with at least a ‘distinction’ mention or equivalent.
* Teaching and research competences aligned with the University of Antwerp’s vision.
* Research qualities aligned with faculty and university research policies.
* Proficiency in spoken and written academic English.
* Basic knowledge of relational and graph data models, data standards in archaeology, and semantic web-related technologies.
* Willingness to participate in archaeological fieldwork for 4-8 weeks during late spring, summer, and/or early autumn in the Mediterranean.
Job Description:
* Actively contribute to the preparation and defense of a PhD thesis on ‘Modelling Space-Time Uncertainty in Archaeological Excavation Information.’
* Explore the application of semantically rich graph data models to enhance the representation of uncertainty in archaeological excavations.
* Publish scientific articles related to the research project.
* Engage in a limited number of teaching and research support tasks for the Department of Heritage.
