PhD Position: Advanced Measurement and Data-Driven Techniques for Automated Structural Assessment
Siemens Digital Industry Software – IntelliWind Network
Based: Leuven Belgium. Hybrid / Working on-location. Full Time Research Position
IntelliWind seeks to appoint 16 highly motivated Ph.D. candidates to a range of positions across Europe. These Doctoral Candidate (DC) positions offer a great opportunity to work with leading experts across Europe to develop Intelligent systems for autonomous wind power plant operations via the IntelliWind MSCA Doctoral Network funded by the European Commission’s Horizon 2023 Marie Skłodowska-Curie programme.
About the project:
The scientific aim of IntelliWind consists in reducing the role of humans in the decision process, as well as reducing the need for direct human interventions in the operations and maintenance process. This frees up human resources to carry out more elaborate, better planned, and more efficient operations – leading to significant improvements in cost efficiency (3-5% lower Levelized Cost of Energy), and reduced labour-intensiveness of wind farm operations. The project will trigger a change in thinking in the skills and tasks that are being used in Wind Power Plant operations from classical engineering tasks to designing, analysing, and interacting with automatic machine algorithms.
The IntelliWind network consists of leading academic institutions and leading industry partners from 8 different countries (Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Spain, Netherlands, Portugal, France, and Switzerland).
About the PhD Position hosted by Siemens Industry Software (SISW) Belgium:
The scientific aim of IntelliWind is to radically improve the level of trust that can be attributed to virtual models of the dynamic behaviour of engineering structures by augmenting models with data and advanced uncertainty analysis. These new developments will be implemented as a series of new verification and validation methods, with applications focused primarily on the wind energy sector.
DC2, will be hosted by Siemens Industries Software (SISW), matriculated at the University of Porto (UPorto), and closely collaborate with ETH Zurich. The candidate will primarily focus on advanced measurement and data-driven techniques for automated structural assessment. The objectives of this thesis include:
1. Develop, combine, and synchronize several optical measurement techniques (camera-based, optical fibers, and optical accelerometers) with conventional measurements.
2. Implement data-driven automated system identification and damage detection methods.
This doctoral student position is offered by SISW. The student will be enrolled at UPorto. The primary academic advisor is Prof. F. Magalhães (UPorto). The DC will be co-advised by Dr. S Vettori (SISW), Dr. E. Di Lorenzo (SISW) and Prof. E. Chatzi (ETH Zurich).
About the candidate's profile:
For this research position applicants must hold a M.Sc. Diploma or equivalent (120 ECTS points) in civil, mechanical, aerospace or electrical engineering, geosciences, physics, applied mathematics, computer sciences or related fields, and be at the beginning of their research career. Principal qualifications include:
3. Strong analytical and quantitative skills in numerical analysis, programming, high-performance computing, as well as skills in dynamics & control, data analysis and modelling, and interest in laboratory-based experimentation and engineering applications.
4. A solid knowledge of English as the spoken and written language of work is mandatory.
5. We expect good interpersonal skills, the ability to thrive in a diverse, multidisciplinary environment, ability to present work in international conference, as well as the willingness to spend a number of months working with project collaborators at partner universities in this project.
