Internship Position
One of the primary objectives of the European lander, Argonaut, is to establish 5G/LTE communication on the lunar surface. This internship aims to evaluate the feasibility and applicability of 5G/LTE architecture for lunar missions. The successful candidate will be a part of the Future Projects & Exploration (FPX) Team in the Technologies, Applications & Research Division (TAR) of our Systems Department and will primarily support the research regarding the design of 5G/LTE communication for Lunar missions.
The candidate will mainly report to the FPX Team Lead.
* Location: Sint-Stevens-Woluwe (Brussels Area)
* Duration: 3 to 6 months
* Start date: As of Quarter 2, 2025.
Tasks and Responsibilities
* Coordinate online with the research team located in different locations to ensure seamless collaboration
* Ensure high functionality in the target system
* Collect and analyse relevant datasheets and technical information
* Develop and enhance early prototypes to meet project requirements
* Perform comprehensive design tasks, including:
o Architecture Design
o Block-Level Design
o Schematic Design.
Skills and Experience
* Currently enrolled in a Master’s Degree in Telecommunication, Electrical, Electronics engineering or an equivalent field
* Understanding of:
o Electronics and Circuit Design (e.g. analog and digital circuits, RF electronics, op-amps, filters, oscillators, and mixers)
o Signal Processing (e.g. Fourier Transform, waveform generation techniques, modulation and demodulation, Signal amplitude, phase, and frequency analysis)
* Ability to conceptualise signal flow (e.g., from antenna to output display)
* Familiarity and knowledge of key components:
o RF Front-End (LNA, Mixer, LO)
o IF (Intermediate Frequency) Section
o ADC (Analog-to-Digital Converter)
o Digital Signal Processing (DSP) Unit
o Display/Interface Module
* Experience in Schematic Design and PCB Layout (e.g. schematic capture software, grounding, shielding, and impedance matching)
* Experience and knowledge in Embedded Systems and Microcontrollers
* Programming skills in C, C++ or Python
* Ability to simulate and analyse RF circuits and signal processing algorithms using MATLAB, Simulink, LTspice, or ADS (Advanced Design System)
* Knowledge in system integration and debugging (e.g. integrate different hardware and software components, Debug using logic analysers, network analysers, and signal generators, system level tasks such as link-budget analysis, trade-offs, parametric modelling)
* Passionate with a problem-solving approach
* Good written and spoken English.
