POSITION OVERVIEW
Bruegel is looking for a recognised leader with strong economic research, policy and management experience to become its next Deputy Director. The Deputy Director, under the guidance of the Director and with the assistance of the Secretary General, contributes to the strategic direction of Bruegel, its research and editorial decisions. As part of the Management s/he will play a pivotal role in steering the think tank's development.
With a team of more than 50 recognised scholars and an overall headcount of more than 90 (many part-time), the incoming Deputy Director is expected to be a team player who can effectively interact with a team of highly visible and impactful scholars and a diverse non-research team in a collegial way. Bruegel has set itself high standards of transparency and research integrity. Personal and professional integrity as well as highest standards in research and communication are among the assets the Deputy Director should bring.
Together with the Director, the Deputy Director will have an important role in representing the organisation vis-a-vis third parties (members, partners, media, etc.). As per the Statutes of Bruegel, s/he is accountable to the Bruegel Board, is appointed for three years and may be re-appointed twice.
Key responsibilities of the Deputy Director
* Expand and contribute to Bruegel’s research output
* Participate in shaping Bruegel’s research agenda
* Support the Director in quality control over Bruegel outputs
* Build and maintain relationships with policymakers, industry stakeholders, donors, and other partners.
* Represent the organization at senior-level meetings, conferences, and public events to advocate for policy ideas and disseminate research findings
* Engage with media outlets and participate in public discussions to promote the organization's work and perspectives on economic policies
* Participate in Bruegel’s Management and Governance meetings
Profile and skills
* Strong research experience (more than 10 years) and strong analytical skills documented with relevant publications
* Capability and willingness to undertake applied economic research
* First-hand experience of policy discussions at the high levels
* Excellent communication skills to address all types of policy forums and willingness to engage in media appearances on a regular basis
* Provide thought leadership on critical policy developments in a fast-paced environment
* Management skills to manage a growing international team of part-time and full-time professionals
* Strong leadership to engage internal Bruegel professionals in research projects, as well as to attract outside researchers to participate in policy debates and contribute to research; good connections with leading academics and experience in running internationally funded research projects and teams
* Ability and readiness to engage in dialogue with Bruegel members and contribute to Bruegel development and fund-raising
* Understanding of global and European institutions and their impact on economic policies.
* Professional English. Knowledge of a further European language would be an asset.
