What will you do as a Trainee Patent Attorney?
Work on a daily basis
As a trainee patent attorney, you will grow - under the intensive supervision of an experienced patent attorney - into an independent consultant for innovative organisations. You will immediately start working in the field and simultaneously attend the patent attorney training course. Thanks to your expertise in Chemistry and your developed legal skills, you will be able to properly advise clients on their intellectual property. You actively support them in managing and developing their patent portfolio. You will be involved in all aspects: from patent application to possible defence.
From day one, you will participate fully in the team and work for national and international clients. During your traineeship you’ll receive guidance from your colleagues. You will work in an international environment and it is possible to take part in various projects within NLO (Artificial Intelligence working group, social responsibility working group, etc.).
How do you become a Trainee Patent Attorney?
Training & education
You don't just become a patent attorney; this requires training. During your traineeship you follow the official professional training program to become a Dutch and/or European patent attorney. NLO sponsors this three-year course, which consists of one day a week. During your training, you will learn how to write a patent application, how grant procedures work and you will learn about the administrative and financial side of patent applications.
Together with your fellow trainees, you will start at the NLO Academy: a varied in-house learning programme. Here, you will not only learn more about patents, but also about trademarks, legal skills, how to deal with clients and other soft skills. The training courses are given by experts in the field: your own colleagues. During the NLO Academy, you will meet new colleagues from the various NLO offices and share experiences with like-minded trainees.
