Role: Unisys Mainframe Engineer Location: Belgium (Hybrid – 1 day/week onsite preferred)Freelance or Permanent – Long-term contractWe are seeking a highly experienced Unisys Mainframe Engineer to support and maintain mission-critical banking applications built on the Unisys mainframe platform (2200, A-Series). This role is essential to maintaining and modernizing core banking systems and will involve working on legacy applications, performance tuning, DMS2 (Database Management System), and ALGOL/COBOL development.As part of a collaborative engineering team, you will play a key role in ensuring the stability and ongoing enhancement of the bank's mainframe infrastructure, directly supporting critical business processes such as payments, customer management, and compliance systems.Key Responsibilities:Maintain and enhance Unisys mainframe applications using ALGOL, COBOL, and DMS2.Perform analysis, debugging, corrections, and optimization of existing Unisys systems and applications.Design and implement improvements to mainframe performance and system efficiency.Collaborate with banking business units and technical teams to analyze functional requirements and translate them into system-level solutions.Participate in code reviews, unit testing, and integration testing of new functionalities.Support migration, upgrade, and modernization projects related to Unisys mainframe systems.Work on batch processing, WFL scripting, and job scheduling related to Unisys platforms.Ensure compliance with security, risk, and regulatory requirements in all technical deliverables.Provide technical guidance and mentoring to junior engineers and share best practices within the team.Key Skills and Experience Required:Strong and proven experience in Unisys mainframe environments (2200 Series, A-Series).Expertise in DMS2 (Database Management System) including database structure design, maintenance, and performance tuning.Proficiency in ALGOL programming in Unisys environments (not limited to COBOL).Solid experience with COBOL, WFL (Work Flow Language), COMS, and other Unisys development tools.Deep understanding of Unisys platform administration, including system performance optimization, troubleshooting, and maintenance.Strong understanding of banking processes (e.g., payments, accounts, compliance) is a plus.Experience with legacy system modernization projects is highly desirable.Familiarity with migration to MicroFocus COBOL or modern platforms is an advantage.Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to work independently as well as in a collaborative team.Strong communication skills, capable of engaging with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
