In an international environment covering multiple insurance entities, the Risk Underwriter is responsible for developing and promoting underwriting and actuarial methodologies. Acting as a second line of defense, the department ensures the implementation of a robust risk management framework to identify, measure, control, and mitigate underwriting risks.
Responsibilities
1. Participate in underwriting-related projects within the group.
2. Review business deals based on predefined criteria (materiality, exceptions).
3. Ensure proper escalation of cases requiring central underwriting governance review.
4. Prepare and follow up on decisions made during Deal Referral Committees.
5. Contribute to reviewing underwriting policies and guidelines.
6. Support the monitoring and profitability analysis of underwriting activities.
7. Develop and standardize pricing methods and tools across entities.
8. Provide risk management insights on underwriting topics, including pricing, performance reporting, governance, and product approval processes.
9. Act as a second line of defense by monitoring portfolio performance and assisting in guideline reviews and underwriting governance.
10. Enhance pricing methodologies through techniques like GLM and segmentation, while conducting back-testing analysis on key pricing assumptions (frequency, cost structures).
11. Actively contribute to cross-functional projects related to underwriting.
12. Serve as a central point of contact and coordinator between underwriting teams, risk management, and commercial teams at both local and regional levels.
Skills
1. Strong knowledge of pricing methods and non-life insurance underwriting.
2. Familiarity with insurance product structures, guarantees, and subscription processes.
3. Proficiency in Excel and Access; knowledge of R or Python is a plus.
4. Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
5. Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical topics.
6. Analytical and problem-solving mindset, with the ability to anticipate risks.
7. Adaptability and curiosity, with an independent approach to work.
8. Comfortable working in a multicultural and remote environment, with occasional travel to the Brussels-based team (4–6 trips per year).
