The VSC (Flemish Supercomputer Centre) supports the HPC (high performance computing) activities in all Flemish university associations (https://www.vscentrum.be) for more than 10 years. Within the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) the local VSC hub is part of the Scientific Data & Compute team (https://hpc.vub.be) which provides centralized services for scientific computing and data storage to the research community. The next leading Flemish HPC infrastructure (https://www.vscentrum.be/compute) of the VSC will be installed and managed by the VSC hub at the VUB. We are looking for a new colleague to join our team to maintain and administer the Tier-1 supercomputer. Your responsibilities are: Together with your colleagues you maintain both the hardware and software stack of the Tier-1 supercomputer infrastructure. The goal is to maximize the availability of the systems while providing services of the highest quality. You collaborate with the vendor of the infrastructure to keep the Tier-1 supercomputer in good health and to plan any maintenance operations needed. You report on the systems utilization, performance and availability. You contribute to the further development of the Tier-1 supercomputer infrastructure and services with focus on automation, monitoring, security and documentation. You participate in enhancing and extending set of tools and scripts that are developed for and by the team. Proper version control (git), KISS, (unit)testing and documenting are key. You contribute to the ongoing team effort for continuous integration: scripts and pipelines are developed with the goal of achieving maximum automation. You help monitoring our systems and swiftly deal with any issues. Where needed, you extend the monitoring to help address any potential problems. In case of hardware issues, you follow up with the vendor until the issue is resolved. You document, plan and report your work in our planning tool (Azure DevOps). For this position our Brussels Humanities, Sciences & Engineering Campus (Elsene) will your place of work, in combination with remote working. What do we expect from you? You have experience with Linux system management, preferably with some flavor of Red Hat Enterprise Linux. You have experience with systemd and can manage service units (aka daemons). Preferably you can also customize or create custom service units. You have experience managing computer clusters. Experience with managing HPC systems (computer clusters with a shared filesystem and a fast interconnect) is a big plus. You can script with Bash and/or Python. You can manage source code with git and can work with remote repositories. Having experience with Pull Request workflows is a plus. Experience or knowledge of any of the following domains is a plus: Network filesystems (IBM Spectrum Scale, Lustre, NFS, ...) LDAP/Kerberos HPC technologies like Slurm, MPI Containers (docker, podman) Configuration Management tools (Ansible, Puppet, ...) Infiniband and ethernet networks Scripting languages (Python, Bash, Perl, …) You hold either a master's degree (or a similar qualification) or a bachelor's degree with several years of relevant experience. You like to share knowledge and express yourself fluently in English. Knowledge of Dutch is a plus. You are eager to learn and are not afraid of reading documentation and searching for new solutions on your own. You are a team player and have good communication skills. You have strong problem-solving skills and can design/prototype solutions on your own to overcome roadblocks in your projects.
