Advanced materials are an important factor for the competitiveness of European industries and are crucial building blocks for the EU’s resilience and open strategic autonomy. The demand for advanced materials is expected to significantly increase in the coming years and should be matched by increased innovation and production in the EU. Europe must ensure it has the necessary capacities and resources to lead innovation and deployment in advanced materials. This will ensure economic security with regards to the critical technologies for today’s society.”About EMIRIEMIRI - the Energy Materials Industrial Research Initiative - is at the forefront of driving research and innovation across Europe on advanced materials for the twin green and digital transition. As the leading European nonprofit-making association (AISBL) in the field of advanced materials for clean energy, EMIRI represents the interests of about 60 organizations (industry players, research entities, associations) developing, manufacturing, and commercializing advanced technologies which are key for Europe’s twin transition.EMIRI is currently coordinating the Advanced Materials 2030 initiative (AMI2030), which, together with the Graphene Flagship, is working closely with the European Commission (EC) on the setup of the Innovative Advanced Materials For Europe under Horizon Europe (the European Union's framework programme for research and innovation), with the ambition to continue under FP10. The main aim of this upcoming transversal partnership will be to put in place an inclusive multi-disciplinary ecosystem to accelerate the development and uptake of innovative advanced materials for the European strategic industrial value chains, starting with energy, mobility, construction, and electronics as preliminary priorities to be extended regularly to other areas depending on common needs identified as specified in the EC Communication ‘Advanced Materials for Industrial Leadership’ on 27 February 2024.What You’ll DoThe MD will be responsible for the daily management of the Association. This includes, but is not limited to:Defining and executing the Association's agenda,Preparing and executing the strategic decisions taken by the Steering Board,Representing the Association in key meetings with the European Commission and other stakeholders, in Brussels and abroad,Overseeing the work done by the staff of the Association (currently a project officer and a communication officer).As the MD, you will play a key role in the smooth functioning and growth of the organization and its external presence. Taking over the reins from the outgoing MD, the new MD will lead the work with the Members, the Steering Committee, and its Chairman of addressing the innovation-related challenges ahead of the innovative advanced materials industry.The positioning and future of EMIRI in the new co-programmed partnership under Horizon Europe on innovative advanced materials will be a crucial project to take on. The first task of the new MD will be to finalize with the Graphene Flagship the setup of a new association (IAM-I: Innovative Advanced Materials Initiative) to sign in Q4 2024 the MoU with the EC for the IAM4EU partnership. EMIRI will merge into IAM-I and the applicant is expected to take on the role of IAM-I Secretary General, following this merger.Minimum RequirementsThe successful candidate should exhibit the following skills and experience:Extensive knowledge of the European funding landscape for research and innovation, particularly in the fields of energy, mobility, construction, and electronics is highly desirable.Experience in an industrial environment (ideally dealing with advanced materials) together with a clear and strong interest for open innovation.Leadership skills to mobilize our membership and manage teams.Visionary and progressive. Exceptional strategic planning and execution abilities.A scientific or technological background in advanced materials is highly desirable.Ability to learn rapidly and assimilate knowledge and insights from the industry.Understanding (and management of) the expectations of the Steering Committee & Members and implementation plan setting targets and delivering on these to ensure success of the Association.Strong advocate, able to understand complex and dynamic issues to influence positively relevant stakeholders and decision-makers to resolve conflicts.Willing to travel extensively within Europe whenever needed.First-class communicator and listener in more than one European language (high proficiency in English is necessary, proficiency in other European languages is a plus, and knowledge of an Eastern European language is a bonus) with strong presentation skills and a passion to synthesize and communicate complex issues and insights.Recruitment ProcessThe executive search firm Dober Partners has been retained to draw up a shortlist of prospective candidates against the criteria set out in this job description.
