YOUR TASKS
* At least 50% of your assignment will be spent on academic research in preparation of a doctoral dissertation.
* At least 20% of your assignment will be spent on assisting in the teaching activities at the department at bachelor or master level.
* You will assist in the internal and external services of the department.
The Laboratory Bacteriology Research (LBR, Prof. Piet Cools) conducts innovative research into the role of the vaginal microbiome in health and disease. The mission of the LBR is to enhance understanding of the interactions between the vaginal microbiome and various conditions to contribute to prevention and treatment. The Ghent University Hospital (UZ Gent) (Prof. Elizaveta Padalko) is part of the National Reference Center for human papillomavirus testing and surveillance. This specific research project focuses on human papillomavirus (HPV) infections and cervical cancer. In this research project, we investigate:
* The role of the vaginal microbiome in HPV acquisition.
* The influence of the microbiome on the persistence of HPV infections.
* The relationship between the microbiome and the development of cervical cancer.
The goal is to acquire fundamental knowledge that can contribute to new prevention and treatment strategies.
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
* You hold a degree of Master in Biomedical Sciences, Biotechnology, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Bioengineering Sciences or Medicine. The degree requirement needs to be fulfilled at the start of your appointment.
* For diplomas awarded outside the European Union, a certificate of equivalence (NARIC) must be submitted.
* You have experience with molecular techniques such as metagenomics and qPCR.
* You have experience with bioinformatics tools to process and analyze microbiome data.
* You have experience with microbiological research.
* You have experience with organizing and teaching practical sessions in the field of life sciences.
* Participation in extra training, conferences, etc. is recommended.
* You have excellent teaching and communication skills.

* We offer you a two-year appointment, which may be renewed twice for two years, on condition that the previous term was given a positive evaluation. Attention: If you have been previously appointed as a junior assistant or doctoral fellow at a university within the Flemish Community, this appointment will be deducted from the maximum term of appointment, which is six years at the most according to the Codex of Higher Education.
