KickCancer is looking for a dynamic individual who excels at managing, engaging, and advocating. We seek someone with a deep sense of empathy and a genuine curiosity about the experiences of patients who surround KickCancer. A strong desire to understand the landscape of paediatric oncology in Belgium, including its cultural and regulatory nuances, is essential.
KickCancer is a vibrant, eight-year-old Foundation of Public Interest dedicated to improving treatments for children with cancer. We fund research and actively connect key players in the field to enhance and expedite their collaborations, ultimately aiming for better, more effective, and kinder drugs for children.
Job Description
With KickCancer, you will:
- Coordinate our Patients’ Committee alongside your French-speaking counterpart:
* Interact with patients interested in volunteering for KickCancer and play an active role in engaging our patient community.
* Identify patients who would be eligible for training to become patient advocates.
* Support expert patients throughout their training journey.
- Collaborate with stakeholders (researchers, healthcare professionals, institutions, patient associations) to involve patients in their projects:
* Manage our community of expert patients, matching them to suitable projects, based on their expertise and interests.
* Provide support and guidance to expert patients engaged in external projects and events.
- Create new tools to empower patients (project management from A to Z):
* Identify, in collaboration with patients, gaps in their care journeys
* Brainstorm potential solutions to address these gaps (booklets, training sessions, peer-to-peer support, etc.).
* Develop innovative tools with patients and specialists to bring those tools from concept to reality.
- Manage KickCancer’s relationship with the Flemish hospitals and the organisation of care in Flanders.
- Be involved in KickCancer’s advocacy projects at the Belgian and Flemish political levels:
* Create a network of politicians and high-level civil servants;
* Draft position papers on trending topics;
* Manage advocacy projects end-to end with Delphine.
- Assist with administrative and technical tasks to support the team when needed (just like in any other small structure).
Expected qualities
* Relevant bachelor’s or master’s degree (background in sciences, psychology, political science, law or regulatory topics)
* At least 4-5 years of experience in prior jobs;
* Excellent command of Dutch (spoken and written), good level of English, and solid understanding of French;
* Great sense of accuracy and attention to details with an eye on the bigger picture;
* A real sense of empathy for interacting with patients;
* An inclination for diplomacy when working on advocacy projects;
* Strong time management skills, including forward planning & prioritising;
* Excellent knowledge of Word, PowerPoint & Excel;
* Pro-active & solution-oriented with a quest for knowledge;
* Comfortable in a possibly ‘emotional’ work environment (kids and young people & parents of kids with cancer) yet likes to KICK and not to cry;
* Above all else, committed to advocate the point of view of patients through high-quality work.
