Vaccines and Pharmaceutical R&D are highly reliant on existing and emerging alliances in the development and commercialization of products, with partnered assets accounting for over 70% of the total R&D pipeline. There is a specific need to centrally manage the high value/risk/complexity globally-partnered programs and assets (including Public/Private Partnership/Consortia/Academic alliances that fit the criteria of high complexity/value/risk) for the organization. A specific area that has increased significantly over the past few years and requires Alliance Management support is Vaccines. The Alliance Director is responsible for enabling the execution of and delivering value of his/her alliance portfolio (3-5 alliances) by:
* Effectively matrix-managing and influencing key internal and external stakeholders associated with partnered projects
* Establishing clear objectives and accountability for alliances
* Providing leadership for the alliances by establishing trust and transparency, through both words and actions
* Proactively diagnosing problems, as well as developing solutions that maximize joint value by exploring the underlying interests (needs, goals, constraints) of each party.
Alliance Directors are also responsible for mitigating risks that are inherent to externalization efforts, across the high value/complexity/risk alliances. They accomplish this by: proactively evaluating, documenting, communicating and managing the centrally managed alliance portfolio against internal policies (e.g., SDEA, SE, ABAC, TPO, Firewall, etc.); and maintenance of AM portfolio reports to document compliance.
The Alliance Directors lead and contribute to the Vx Alliance Management community meetings and training sessions, and the development and implementation of standardized processes for alliance launches, ongoing management, amendments, terminations, out-licensing, or spin-offs; and maintain a master list of alliances across GSK.
Job Purpose:
The main purpose of this role is to manage the growing portfolio of Vx Alliances and, when needed, support identifying, evaluating and executing Vx deals that support the R&D strategy.
Key Responsibilities:
* Act as Primary Point of Contact for the Alliance (internally and with the Partner); Cultivate an effective working relationship and facilitate communications between parties. Work with partner, Vx RLT and DPL/VDL to ensure achievement of mutual strategic objectives within the Alliance along with continuous value generation.
* Make global strategic management decisions through the identification and application of relevant criteria and application of development and commercialization experience/knowledge.
* Enable execution of each alliance in the portfolio from pre-signing through the life of the deal, including renegotiation, spin-off, termination, and out-licensing.
* Provide input into new deals, specifically with respect to how the deal will operate, including: governance structure/decision-making, milestone reporting, payment schedules, development project planning, communications/publications, commercial practices, etc.
* Develop solutions that maximize joint value by exploring the underlying interests (needs, goals, constraints) of each party, rather than by haggling over positions and trading concessions.
* Support the Identifying & sourcing of opportunities, evaluating, conducting due diligence, building a compelling business case, deal structuring, negotiating, closing deals while working in a matrixed environment with Deal Finance, Legal, Corp Dev and other teams.
* Ensure delivery of alliance management partner arrangements to assigned business targets, maximizing commercial value and minimizing time to market.
* Proactively identify issues/problems and initiate solutions to resolve and/or appropriately escalate unresolved issues for information or intervention, including leading activities associated with renegotiations and terminations.
* Be trained on and communicate appropriate compliance policies relating to alliance collaborations in effort to mitigate risks associated with GSK’s partners’ understanding of and adherence to essential GSK policy principles.
* Facilitate action by others — internal and external — through a clearly articulated, transparent process. Leverage excellent interpersonal, relationship management, influencing, leadership and communication skills including: demonstrated credibility with senior management and key stakeholders.
