The Scientific Data & Compute team of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel is looking for a Research Software Developer to support research groups such as B-TXT, SHOC, CLWF, BCLS, and CLIC. These researchers are active in a variety of disciplines such as philosophy, history, sociology, and linguistics and are aiming at innovating research in the Humanities and Social Sciences using digital tools and services. To deal with the challenges specific to humanities research, being amongst others the utilization of a wide range of sources, from ancient manuscripts to modern digital data, specific and often creative solutions are required. In your role as research software developer, you will play a crucial part in bridging cutting-edge technology with pioneering research. You will be assisting the researchers in building collaborative databases, visualization tools, public-oriented science communication platforms, and other web-based systems. For example, using Handwritten Text Recognition and Natural Language Processing to extract historical tabular data. The ideal candidate will be a technically proficient developer with a passion for academic research and a DevOps mindset. You will be part of the Scientific Data & Compute team (https://hpc.vub.be) whose mission is to support researchers with their IT needs. Most days of the week you will be embedded in the research group. This will put you in the unique position to have direct access to the central IT resources while being able to support the researchers of the digital humanities. Key Responsibilities: You serve as a contact point for researchers and contribute to the functional analysis and software architecture to efficiently meet project requirements. You evaluate and use existing open-source tools and libraries, publish code as open-source software, and actively contribute to open-source software. Deployment and Production Management: Deploy developed tools to production environments, ensuring reliability and accessibility for the research team. Researcher Support and Training: Work directly with researchers, offering hands-on support and training to enable them to use developed tools effectively. Maintain and Improve Software Solutions: Continuously monitor and enhance the tools, addressing issues promptly and iteratively improving performance. Collaborate with IT and Research Teams: Act as a bridge between the IT department and research group, facilitating communication and ensuring the developed solutions align with both academic and technical standards. For this position our Brussels Humanities, Sciences & Engineering Campus (Elsene) will your place of work, in combination with remote working. What do we expect from you? You have a thing for IT, and you love to learn new things in a high paced and complex environment. You have a master's degree, will graduate this academic year or can provide proof of equivalent experience. The degree is preferably related to computer science (e.g., Master of Science in Computer Engineering, Computer Science). If you have a bachelor we expect you to have relevant experience in the demanded field. You like to share knowledge and express yourself fluently in English and/or Dutch. You possess at least a basic knowledge of Linux, and you are prepared to learn (a lot) more. You are a team player, customer focused and a nice colleague with a good sense of humor. You preferably have an interest in working with art, heritage, historical sources, and the humanities. You have demonstrable experience, knowledge, or can quickly familiarize yourself with the following topics: Development with modern frameworks such as Vue or Django; Various programming languages such as Python, PHP and Javascript; Development of user-friendly interfaces; Experience with version control using Git and modern software development practices; Experience with CI/CD pipelines; Basic Linux system administration and containerized development (Docker); Integration of front-end and back-end (Database technology); VUB aims to be a reflection of society where everyone's talent is valued, regardless of gender, sex, age, religion, skin color, migration background, functional disability and neurodiversity.
