Are you our next team member to perform and develop radiological environmental impact assessments?
The Biosphere Impact Studies (BIS) Unit at the Belgian Nuclear Research Centre in Mol is seeking a new team member for their radiological environmental impact assessment (REIA) team. This team supports the sustainability of the nuclear life cycle by implementing circular economy principles, such as waste release during dismantling and site remediation. They focus on understanding environmental processes affecting radionuclide dispersion, improving dose estimations, and developing models and tools. BIS also provides technical and scientific support for decision-makers, assesses radiological impacts on humans and the environment, develops risk evaluations for humans and wildlife, and creates biobased site remediation solutions.
The ideal candidate is able to:
* Apply their environmental knowledge and data analysis skills to support diverse environmental projects.
* Learn to perform radiological environmental impact assessments to support management of radioactive waste and remediation of contaminated sites using in-house tools and models.
* Develop REIA tools tailored to the needs of our clients (e.g., site-specific).
* Compile, manage, process, and analyse environmental data to support conceptual and numerical model development as well as decision making.
* Build user-friendly and interactive applications and dashboards with environmental data.
* Prepare reports and technical presentations for clients, regulators, and other stakeholders.
* In time, perform radiological evaluations and provide advice on countermeasures within the framework of emergency planning (CELEVAL) using in-house models.
To join this frontier, you'll need:
* Master in industrial engineering, applied mathematics, sciences, or a related field.
* Demonstrated experience in scientific computing and numerical modelling for environmental applications.
* Proficiency in computer programming using scripting languages (e.g., Python, Matlab).
* Experience with data management and analysis using tools such as MySQL, PostgreSQL, Power Query, and Power BI.
* Good communication skills in written and spoken English.
* Ability to work independently and as part of a team to complete technical work.
* Proficiency with the Microsoft Office suite.
You preferably have experience with or knowledge of:
* Subsurface flow and transport modelling.
* The Linux operating system.
* Programming languages such as Fortran and C#.
