Job Summary
The UA technical manager will plan, manage, conduct and report on technical UA related remediation of planned software applications and tools. The manager will also conduct engagement with external technical managers and software application developers (in software development companies or open-source communities) for remediating Universal Acceptance (UA) issues in the tools and services which they provide. This includes understanding and documenting the software bugs or features and developing code to fix them, or submitting bug reports and then communicating these effectively to tool maintainers.
The manager will coordinate with other IDN-UA team members to develop and manage specific and detailed case for each technical organization or software development community being outreached along with the messaging and strategy to make the outreach effective. This also includes anticipating challenges in addressing the UA issues for these stakeholders and identifying how ICANN org and UA Steering Group could help resolve such issues.
The manager will document the plan and progress, provide regular reporting on the outreach, and will work closely with UA team supporting the UA Steering Group activities.
Key Responsibilities & Duties:
1. Develop and execute plans to fix UA related software issues in applications and tools and to engage with the various technical stakeholders for UA remediation in consultation with the Senior Technical Manager UA Program.
2. Undertake technical and organizational research to develop case for each technical company or open-source software community for outreach, including specific gap analysis, messaging, outreach strategy and contacts to connect with.
3. Undertake the engagement plan for multiple cases in parallel and manage the progress of these accounts towards achieving UA readiness.
4. Initiate and maintain relationships with various software development companies, developer communities, standards bodies and other relevant groups.
5. Maintain clear documentation on engagement plans, engagement progress and accomplished work.
6. Provide regular reporting on the progress on UA readiness with the different stakeholders.
7. Plan, develop and undertake technical training for the various technical stakeholders.
8. Other duties as assigned or requested.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs):
9. Demonstrated ability and experience in account management, to engage with the technical and development community.
10. Experience in software development using different programming platforms, including PHP, Java, Python and others.
11. Experience with internationalization and DNS related programming and applications.
12. Experience of participating with technical and open-source communities, filing bug reports and using software repositories (like GitHub) will be useful.
13. Experience in conducting technical training on software design and development.
14. Excellent oral and written communication and engagement skills.
15. Ability to understand technical issues in technology related to UA, IDNs and DNS.
Education and Experience Requirements:
16. Bachelor’s Degree required with at least eight years of experience or a master’s degree with at least six years of experience. Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Software Development, or a related field desired. Master’s degree highly preferred.
Experience:
17. Minimum of five years of experience in software development, including internationalization and DNS related development.
18. Experience in account management is highly desired.
19. Prior experience working for an international organization, strongly preferred.
Languages:
20. Fluency, both written and spoken, in English is required.
21. ICANN is a global organization that values diversity; preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated skills in additional languages besides English.
Working Conditions & Physical Requirements
22. International travel may be required to support ICANN related meetings as requested for lengths of 7-10 days for each trip, approximately three times per year, likely on different continents.
23. Willingness and ability to travel domestically and internationally 30% of the time, or as needed.
24. Ability to travel without restrictions globally, frequently with limited notice is required.
25. Comfort level with an international work environment that requires availability at times outside normal business hours.
26. Work is performed in a normal office environment with limited privacy and some exposure to background noise.
27. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand and walk. The employee regularly is required to sit. The employee is frequently required to talk or hear; use hands and arms to reach, handle or feel. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus.
