The European Clean Trucking Alliance
We are seeking a consultant to provide secretariat function to the European Clean Trucking Alliance. The Alliance is a broad coalition that brings together some of Europe’s largest transport and logistics companies and civil society calling for an acceleration of the transition to zero-emission trucks.
Its membership is a unique combination of progressive shippers, carriers and NGOs. Industry members include heavy weights such as IKEA, Deutsche Post DHL Group and Geodis as well as SMEs which form the backbone of European road logistics. The Alliance is growing at a fast pace (+50 members and supporters under 5 years) since its creation, and it will celebrate its fifth anniversary in 2025.
The Alliance focuses on future-proof policies, programmes and initiatives that drive the technological and ecosystem shift away from fossil-fuelled vehicles to vans and trucks with zero tailpipe emissions. Its activities include:
1. Developing policy recommendations and providing input to EU and national policy-making processes
2. Best practice-sharing
3. Conducting research and providing evidence
4. Raising public awareness
The Alliance is hosted and funded by the Transport Programme of the European Climate Foundation (ECF) - a major philanthropic initiative working to tackle climate change by fostering the development of a low-carbon society at the national, European and global level.
Position
We are now looking for a consultant to take over the secretariat function to the European Clean Trucking Alliance, starting as soon as possible. The secretariat was set up at the end of 2022 to professionalise the Alliance and ramp up its activities. We are now looking for a replacement to the current consultant who will be leaving at the end of February. The Foundation is looking for an individual able to commit until at least 2027, contingent on funding.
Responsibilities
1. Ensure overall smooth running and professional engagement of all activities of the Alliance
2. Facilitate communication and cooperation between members and centralise the Alliance contact list (members, media, stakeholders)
3. Organise and chair general meetings
4. Set up meetings with external stakeholders
5. Support to set up a rotating Chair and new Working Groups
6. Support the Chair and Working groups in their day-to-day activities including organisation of WG meetings, preparation of policy papers and similar material
7. Identify opportunities for media interventions and social media campaigns to stress the importance of decarbonising freight transport
8. Build and maintain relationships with relevant actors in the industry, policy, NGO and media spheres
9. Help with ad-hoc requests together with ECF Transport programme, Alliance and Working Group Chairs
10. Attend and contribute to technical working group meetings and act as contact point with the European Commission and other relevant stakeholders
11. Actively contribute to and coordinate the development of the Alliance (governance, partnership)
Organisational
1. Coordinate actions, activities and priorities with the ECF Transport Programme, the Chair and Working Group Chairs
2. Administer and coordinate response to queries the Alliance receives
3. Collect and manage requests to join the Alliance; active search for new members
4. Organise outreach programs at request of WG members
5. Update as necessary the Alliance’s MoU, working closely with the ECF Transport programme, the Chair and Working Group Chairs
6. Ensure smooth running of the IT system, shared drives, mailing lists etc.
Communications & Strategy
1. Help put together a work plan for the next 12 months, spanning all areas of activity
2. Develop a communication strategy in collaboration with the ECF Transport programme to raise the Alliance profile and reinforce its media presence
3. Manage communications activities on behalf of the Alliance
4. Draft the Alliance press releases and organise the launch of policy papers and studies
5. Take over the curation of the Alliance social media account(s) and the website
6. Manage the organisation of events, in coordination with the ECF Transport programme and the relevant Working Group Chair(s)
7. Monitor relevant EU policy developments (intelligence gathering) for the benefit of the membership and share the information
8. Assist the Alliance in pulling together presentations and other outreach material that are in direct relation to the Alliance activities
9. Identify relevant research topics and coordinate research activities in support of the shift to zero-emission trucking
Networking
1. Develop a good working relationship with all members, and with other relevant stakeholders.
2. Attend relevant EP, Commission, Council and stakeholder events with a direct bearing on the business of the Alliance
3. Profile raising: Highlight pertinent speaking participation opportunities for the Alliance and its Spokesperson
Requirements
We are looking for a motivated individual to drive change within a membership-based organisation. The consultant should ideally be based in Brussels and be available to start as soon as possible. The missions require strong organisational, convening, and communication skills. The consultant’s priorities will be to deliver research and policy content, organise public affairs events (including its fifth anniversary celebration), and reinforce the Alliance’s visibility in EU media and policy circles. Junior profiles and more experienced professionals alike are encouraged to submit their profiles.
Experiences and skills expected:
1. A genuine interest in the mission of the Alliance
2. A good understanding of European Union policymaking (essential) and previous experience in the mobility sector (desirable)
3. Ability to commission research projects and deliver the results to internal (members) and external audiences (policymakers, industry players, civil society)
4. Previous experience in organising in-person events (essential) and managing the day to day of a membership-based organisation (desirable)
5. A flexible approach and problem-solving attitude (essential)
6. Proven ability to interact with a wide range of stakeholders (CEOs, industry representatives, NGOs, policy makers, media)
7. Previous experience handling media relations (desirable)
8. Fluency in English. Command of another European language is desirable
9. A willingness to travel to other European capitals as part of events and site visits
10. Be registered as an individual consultancy in your country of residence (preferably Belgium), adhering to the consultancy/freelance laws. If not yet registered, willingness to take on this task prior to starting the consultancy contract
Other information
We are advertising an initial 6-month consultancy contract (with a view to extending it) for 2-3 days a week (the number of days can be discussed). The daily consultancy fee will be commensurate to the individual’s experience.
