Want to help clean up car manufacturing and shape the future of the automotive industry?
Transport & Environment (T&E), Europe’s leading clean transport think tank and campaign group, is looking for a passionate and strategic policy expert to drive the transition towards sustainable and circular car manufacturing.
As Automotive Sustainability Policy Manager, you will lead efforts to reduce the carbon and material footprint of Europe’s automotive sector. This is a unique opportunity to influence EU policies, engage with key industry players, and push for systemic change in car production.
Specifically you will:
1. Lead T&E’s work on key automotive policies related to vehicle materials, sustainability, and circularity by developing and implementing impactful policies.
2. Coordinate efforts on automotive sustainability, working across internal teams, T&E members, and national experts.
3. Conduct assessment of carmakers' sustainability strategies.
4. Scope new relevant topics and take them forward, including commissioning and delivery of impactful research.
5. Shape EU policy by designing and executing advocacy strategies on regulations such as the End-of-Life Vehicle Regulation, EU Circularity Act, and lifecycle assessments or clean steel and aluminium policies.
6. Develop research and policy recommendations on key automotive materials like steel and aluminum, helping to decarbonize car manufacturing.
7. Support the building and implementation of national strategies in key national markets, such as France, Germany, Spain, Italy, UK and Poland;
8. Represent T&E in external engagements, building partnerships with EU policymakers, industry stakeholders, and NGOs.
9. Work closely with T&E’s leadership to meet funder requirements and program goals.
The successful candidate should meet the following requirements:
Essential requirements:
1. Experience working on automotive policies: good understanding of how policies affect the automotive industry;
2. Expertise in automotive production, vehicle circularity, material sustainability or vehicle lifecycle assessments;
3. At least 3-5 years of relevant experience in policy, industry, or advocacy.
4. Strong stakeholder engagement skills – ability to work with policymakers, industry experts, and NGOs.
5. Analytical & strategic thinking – ability to grasp complex issues and translate them into clear, actionable recommendations.
6. Project management skills – experience managing programs across multiple teams.
7. Excellent communication skills – able to break down technical content for different audiences.
8. Enjoys working in a team environment;
9. Enjoys scoping new projects;
Good to have:
1. Experience coordinating multi-stakeholder coalitions or projects;
2. Ability to develop and implement strategic policy positions;
The position will be primarily based in Brussels but would involve occasional travel.
