Junior or senior researcher in the ethics of technology The Evangelische Theologische Faculteit, Leuven (ETF Leuven) is a unique institution of higher education. It is located in the oldest university town in the Benelux – in a country where Protestantism is a small minority. At the same time, it is one of the few Evangelical and interdenominational institutions for university education in Europe, which has a broad influence far beyond its borders. The programs are NVAO accredited.ETF Leuven, in collaboration with Delft University of Technology, is looking fora junior or senior researcher in the ethics of technology (1 fte).It is an appointment for either doctoral or postdoctoral research, for a period of four years. Appointment is possible from August 1, (in consultation, a possible later start date is possible).What we offer and expect:– We offer you a responsible and varied position as a PhD student or postdoctoral researcher in the externally funded research project ‘Responsibility Ethics as a New Paradigm for Engaging Technical Developments’, conducted by the ETF Leuven in collaboration with Delft University of Technology.– You will be part of a research team, led by Dr. Steven van den Heuvel and Prof. Dr. Michel Verhaegen, which is developing a new framework to address ethics in the design process of new technologies.– In your specific project, you will help to create a concrete model of responsibility ethics, which can be used by technical engineers, in the development of newtechnologies.– Your research will have a strong empirical focus and can either be done in the form of a doctoral project (whereby you will publish your research results in a number of academic articles, resulting in a publishable dissertation) or in the form of a postdoctoral project (whereby you will publish your research results in a number of academic articles, resulting in a monograph).– In addition, you will be involved in other activities: you will participate in a ‘sounding board’, in the context of this research project; you will also be involved to a limited extent in teaching and in academic services.– You will work closely with two junior researchers, who are simultaneously developing a biblical-theological basis for the ethics of responsibility.– You will receive an employment contract for 38 hours per week and a bench fee, initially for one year, with the prospect of an extension to a total of four years; the salary will be determined based on experience and seniority according to internal salary scales.Ideal profile– You have a Master’s degree in a relevant scholarly discipline (philosophy of science, applied ethics, management of technology, machine learning, …).– In case you apply as a doctoral student, you also have to have a Master’s degree in theology or religious studies. In case you apply as a postdoctoral researcher, there is no such requirement, but theological sensitivity is a plus.– You have an affinity with the field of philosophy and ethics of technology; a background and/or interest in AI, machine learning, or systems and control is a plus.– You have good research qualities.– You are motivated to make an innovative contribution to the development of a new ethical framework for the design process of new technologies.– You are a good team player who can contribute to the research project ‘Responsibility Ethics as a New Paradigm for Engaging Technical Developments’ based on your own expertise.– You have a flexible, enterprising and driven attitude.– You have strong oral and written expression skills in English.
